Plano Haggard Library Event Featured in the Dallas Morning News

The Dallas Morning News, photographer: Stewart F. House, was kind enough to cover a story about the Princess Party at the Haggard Library in Plano, Texas.  I feel really blessed and honored to not only represent Texas in the United America system, but to also represent a pageant system that truly is about making a positive difference in the lives of those in our communities!

Plano Haggard Library Princess Party

I know I love the luxury that electronics and technology offer...BUT there is nothing like reading a book the old fashioned way. There is something about picking out a real book and holding it while I flip the pages....just not the same for some reason on my Kindle.  So, having said that, I LOVE sharing my love for reading, stories, and imagination with children.  That is why I was thrilled at the invitation to the Plano Haggard Library Princess Party I received from my friend Angelica Jasmine Bates, Miss Texas Teen Princess America 2014. There were so many little girls and boys who dressed up like Princes and Princess and were ready to hear Angelica's story.  The special thing about it is that Angelica performs the stories to the children in American Sign Language and even teaches them words and has them repeat it. It was a very fun thing to watch the kids in an interactive fun way to learn.  It was great exposure for the kids and  I really enjoyed meeting so many new people while promoting the Plano Haggard Library Programs.

McKinney Heard Museum-Holiday Trail of Lights

I really like to support and promote local programs that have great educational programs.  This holiday season, I got the pleasure of being a guest at the McKinney Heard Museum Holiday Trail of Lights.
If you have never been there, is beautiful, especially when the 289 acres is decorated in so many Christmas lights! Here is a little information:
The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary, in McKinney Texas, is the result of Bessie Heard’s vision for the future and her commitment to the community and North Texas.
Founded in 1967, the Heard consists of a 289 acre wildlife sanctuary and a natural science museum for the primary purpose of educating children about nature. The Heard exists to bring nature and people together to discover, enjoy, experience, restore, and preserve our priceless environment.
The Heard’s purpose is threefold: education, conservation, and preservation. In keeping with Miss Heard’s vision, Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary emphasizes an appreciation of nature and its conservation through education.
The emphasis of the Heard’s education programs is children; however, the Heard also offers programs that will interest visitors of any age.

Rains County Historical Society-Live Nativity Scene

Christmas is my favorite time of year and a great time to reflect on what the season is all about and spend quality time with family and close friends.  I had an even bigger joy this year for having the honor of being Mary in the Rains County Historical Societies Live Nativity Scene this year.  Being involved in the community, giving back, and really reflecting on the reason for the season is such a beautiful way to rejuvenate and renew and one of my favorite things to do, especially over Christmas.

The Harbor hosts annual Toys for Tots drive Friday

The 4th Annual Harbor Rockwall Toys For Tots toy drive is Friday 12/12/14 at the Rockwall Harbor! This is a great chance to donate to local children and help them have a wonderful Christmas this year.
I was thrilled to participate in this toy drive and will more than likely be a part of it next year as well.  This is a great event that also brings out Fox 4, 100.3 Jack FM and the United States Marine Corp!

Donate to your local Women's Shelter

We did something really fun and rewarding this year for Christmas. We love giving a lot of gifts to our family and friends and are blessed whenever we are  able to do that. However, this year we started a fun tradition of taking that Christmas budget and buying gifts for a family we adopted from the New Beginning Center Women's Shelter.
I had such a great time shopping for this family we adopted! We don't have children yet so I had no idea of the madness that comes from trying to get the popular Elsa dolls! Boy, I got a taste of the Frozen frenzie trying to get these dolls for this family! It reminded me of the stories my mom used to tell me when I was a kid and she went out and fought the crowd for my favorite Cabbage Patch Kids Dolls. Remember those? lol

Rains County Junior High Life Skills Class-Thanksgiving Luncheon

I was invited to join the Rains County Junior High Life Skills Class Thanksgiving Luncheon this year! I had such a great time with the student and faculty.  These kids are the sweetest kids and really enjoyed making dishes for the Thanksgiving luncheon and exchanging gifts to other students in the special education Life Class group.  I got to sit next to Colby and we enjoyed our lunch together. He is the sweetest young man!
Colby and I before we all sat down for the Thanksgiving Luncheon.

I am proud to say that my mom is a school nurse at Rains County Junior High and it was so sweet hear the kids talk about how great my mom helps  take care of them.  Among the staff members with my fabulous mom, is the principal and special education teachers.  They were nice enough to take a photo with me and I am honored to have meet such wonderful and compassionate people.  They are truly genuine and sincere people that give continuously to the kids and should constantly be commended.

Pageantry helps build Valuable Interview and Presentation Skills!

Interview, presentation, and overall communication skills are essential for success in today's marketplace.  These are invaluable skills that must be honed and polished as much as possible.  Pageantry really helps provide these life skills! I used to NEVER feel confident and easily intimidated when approaching a job interview. Especially is I REALLY wanted the position.  Pageantry is a great preparation for that aspect of the world.
At the Mrs. Texas United America 2014 Pageant, I not only won the title but I also won the Overall Interview Award! This is a huge accomplishment considering I remember a time when I would literally start sweating at the THOUGHT of being put on the spot in an interview. Now, I feel confident that I can go into any interview with my head held high and have the confidence to put my best stiletto-clad foot forward.
I had the most amazing Pageant Coach help me through the process of learning how to become the best version of myself and communicate more effectively.  I encourage ANYONE that would like to be better polished in interview skills or just pageantry in general to contact Kayla Wharton with Capture the Crown. I really mean it...you wont be sorry. Her website is www.kaylawharton.com/
In pageantry interviews as well as job interviews, you should appear as confident, grounded, calm and poised as possible.  You want to be able to energetically communicate your position and message in the best way possible. Here are just a few tips I have learned in pageantry and had success when applying to the business world:

  1. Write down your general thoughts about your mission and vision for your life! Companies have mission and vision statements for their brands and so should you! YOU are your brand and you should have an idea of  what you want out of life. That's the first step in going after it! If you know who you are and what you want...you can answer most questions about yourself!
  2. It's okay not to know the answer to every question. Most of the time people remember how you reacted and addressed things you weren't sure of rather then the words you said. If you appear calm and confident and admit what you don't know and emphasize what you DO know...that's what people will remember. Remember it isn't always WHAT you say..but HOW you say it.
  3. Know what you would say to the question..."Tell me about yourself." This is a hard question for people! No one knows about you more than YOU! Get comfortable telling 2 or 3 brief highlights about yourself that are memorable!
  4. Know and learn about the position you are applying for. Whether it be for a pageant title or a job...KNOW about the organization and company! When they are wrapping up the job interview and ask you if you have any questions....Know enough about the company to ask a few insightful and thoughtful questions. This is memorable to employers because it shows that you have researched the position and the company.
I was so happy to volunteer for a Mock Interview Session with my pageant pals Angela Pollard and Amanda Van Sickle.  Wonderful ladies that truly enjoy helping other young ladies develop and hone their life skills!

New Beginning Center 5k Fundraiser, Dallas Texas

On October 25th, New Beginning Center, a non-profit for victims of domestic violence has their annual 5k fundraiser.  This was my first appearance as Mrs. Texas United America! The beautiful Whitney Besada, Mrs. Texas America came out to be with me and participate in this fundraiser.  Whitney is such an amazing woman and I am proud that I have met her and excited about all her accomplishments. I absolutely LOVE getting to do appearances and events with other pageant titleholders, especially other titleholders representing Texas in other pageant organizations!!
I am honored to be so involved with bringing awareness against domestic violence and was thrilled to be at the 5k this year.  New Beginning Center is a organization that helps victims of domestic violence in the Dallas/Garland area. I encourage everyone to seek out their local shelters and donate anything you can. Anything helps! Money of course always helps but they need toiletries, clothes, food etc.  This is a serious issue that will take all of us to educate and eradicate! Thank you again, Whitney, for taking the time to support a cause that is so near and dear to my heart!

My Crowning Moment-October 2014

In October of  2014, I traveled to San Antonio with my dear friends Kayla Wharton (Capture the Crown Pageant Coach) , and Crissy Broeske. ( Owner of Building Inner Beauty Pageant Organization).  I am so blessed to have such wonderful friends and owe so much to the world of pageantry.  Many people misconstrue pageantry as a vain hobby full of superficial focus and egomania.  The truth is, Pageantry has made me such a better, more humble person.  My daily focus is how I can use the opportunities God has blessed me with to leave a legacy of giving and to truly impact my community for the better.  Pageantry has also helped turn a shy, insecure, quiet person into a woman that can inspire and encourage others, and speak to thousands of people on a variety of topics.  I am finally comfortable in my own skin and I owe it to the journey I have taken through pageantry.
When they announced my name as the new Mrs. Texas United America, I was elated! I am so passionate and excited about using the title to promote as many non profit organizations and events as possible! What made my crowning moment so special.....was to know that I wasn't alone. I have not had that many female friends in my life. However, in this crowning moment, I looked into the audience and saw my friends Kayla Wharton and Crissy Broeske wiping tears of pride and joy...for me. True friends that helped me to achieve and succeed ...and were truly happy for me. I have never had that in my life and it was a moment I knew that I was truly blessed with a wonderful opportunity and an amazing support system.
Thank you to Kayla Wharton, my pageant coach and my friend. Thank you to Crissy Broeske who became my friend through choosing to stand beside her on a competition stage. Pageantry brought us together and now we stand behind each other as friends. If only the world knew this side of the pageant industry....I hope I can do a good job of showing the world the bright side. :-) Stay tuned for more pics of my journey as Mrs. Texas United America.
